All enrolled students who are working towards a degree at BHH and are planning a stay abroad may apply. In the case of students with a nationality other than German, funding for stays in their home country is excluded.

Study-related stays abroad are funded in the following funding lines:

  1. Study stays (minimum one month)
Study stays at foreign universities are funded. The maximum funding period is three months. Applicants should already have confirmation of admission from the host university at the time of application. In addition to the partial scholarship, a one-off mobility allowance may be granted. Please note that as a so-called "freemover", you will have to pay tuition fees at the host university, which are generally not covered by the PROMOS programme. Subject to availability of funds, an additional subsidy may be possible in exceptional cases. Please contact the International Office in this regard.
  2. Internships (minimum one month)
Internships at companies and research institutions abroad are funded. The maximum funding period is three months. In addition to the partial scholarship, a one-off mobility allowance may be granted. Applicants should already have confirmation from the host institution at the time of application.
  3. Language courses (minimum three weeks / 25 hours per week)
Participation in language courses at universities or established language institutes abroad is funded. The maximum funding period is one month. • Relevant language skills
  • Financial situation
  • Social engagement

All applicants will receive a decision from the selection committee at the end of November 2025 (1st selection round) or in early April 2026 (2nd selection round). If you have been selected for a PROMOS scholarship, you will receive the scholarship agreement and further important information by e-mail.

Important note: If you do not wish to accept the scholarship or wish to withdraw your application, please inform the International Office as early as possible so that the funds can be reallocated if necessary.

1. Before your stay abroad:

After you have received the scholarship confirmation, submit the signed scholarship agreement to the International Office (please observe the deadline stated in the e-mail).

By signing the scholarship agreement, you undertake to submit all documents required for the payment of the scholarship to the International Office in the correct form and within the required deadlines. You also undertake to repay the scholarship in whole or in part if you terminate your stay abroad early or do not comply with the regulations.

It is strongly recommended that you arrange sufficient insurance cover for the period of your stay abroad. If necessary, please contact your domestic insurance providers in this regard. DAAD scholarship holders also have the option of taking out international insurance (combined health, accident and personal liability insurance) under the DAAD's group tariff.

2. During your stay abroad:

Within the first week of your stay abroad, you must have the Certificate of Arrival signed by your contact person at the host institution (International Office, internship officer etc.). Please send the signed document to the International Office by e-mail.

If you are completing a study stay (exchange semester), please also resubmit the Learning Agreement, signed by all parties (and, where applicable, with the agreed amendments), together with your Certificate of Arrival.

At the end of your stay, please have your contact person sign the Certificate of Departure and submit it to the International Office by e-mail no later than one week after your return.

3. After your stay abroad:
No later than four weeks after the end of your stay abroad, you must submit an experience report. This should be a maximum of three A4 pages long. Photos may also be included. Please note that the experience report will be published on Moodle (in anonymised form if requested).

In your report, please provide information in particular on:

  • Preparation (planning, organisation and application at the host institution)
  • Accommodation
  • Experiences relating to the study/specialist course/language course/internship at the host institution
  • Daily life and free time
  • Conclusion

After the end of your stay, all scholarship holders must also submit a certificate of academic achievement (depending on the funding line, the Transcript of Records (ToR), internship certificate or the certificate of participation for the language course or specialist course).

Once all documents are available, we will issue your scholarship certificate. This concludes participation in the PROMOS programme.

To increase equal opportunities within project funding for students with disabilities or chronic illnesses, the DAAD may, by granting an allowance, cover the additional expenses incurred abroad as a result.

To have these additional expenses in a project covered, one allowance application must be submitted per person and per mobility measure. As an allowance, a maximum of EUR 10,000 may be granted to cover the additional expenses (including expenses for any accompanying person).

Persons with a degree of disability (GdB) of at least 50 or a chronic illness are entitled to apply. Students who wish to submit this application should seek advice in good time (at least 3 months before the planned stay abroad). Please contact the International Office and/or BHH's Disability Officer in this regard.

Detailed information on mobility with a disability or chronic illness can be found in the DAAD information sheet.

PROMOS funding generally consists of a country-dependent monthly allowance. The allowances are the same for all types of mobility, but the funding period varies according to the length and type of the stay abroad and according to the availability of funds. Depending on the pool of applicants and the budget situation, a one-off mobility allowance, a one-off course fee allowance (for language or specialist courses) or a subsidy for tuition fees (for study stays) may be paid in addition to the maintenance allowance.

2. How long can my stay be funded for?

  • Study stay: 1 month up to a maximum of 3 months
  • Internship: 1 month up to a maximum of 3 months
  • Specialist course (Summer School): half a month (for stays of up to 14 days) up to a maximum of 1 month

No, tuition fees are generally not covered by the PROMOS programme. In exceptional cases, however, a subsidy for tuition fees may be granted.

4. Can I still apply if the stay abroad to be funded has already ended?

No. At the time of the application deadline, the stay abroad must not yet have ended.

For English as the national/working language, the following official language certificates are recognised: TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, UNicert, Cambridge, DELE, DELF, PTE. The Abitur certificate and other evidence obtained during school may also be accepted in some cases. Individual checks are carried out by the International Office.

6. How old may the language certificate be?

At the time of application, the language certificate may not be more than four years old.

7. What level must the language certificate be?

The certificate is not tied to a specific level; however, your existing language skills will be taken into account when assessing your application.

8. Must the expert opinion be issued by a professor?

No, the expert opinion may also be issued by a lecturer. The person should know you well enough to assess your academic achievements.
